Background of the Study
Diabetes mellitus, particularly type 2, is a prevalent chronic condition among the elderly, necessitating comprehensive management to prevent complications. Effective management in primary healthcare settings involves regular monitoring, medication adherence, lifestyle modifications, and patient education. However, managing elderly diabetic patients presents unique challenges due to age-related factors such as comorbidities, cognitive decline, and social issues.
In Nigeria, primary healthcare centers (PHCs) are the first point of contact for many patients, especially in rural areas like Kebbi State. These centers are pivotal in providing accessible healthcare services, including diabetes management. However, PHCs often face challenges such as inadequate staffing, limited resources, and insufficient training, which can impede effective diabetes care. Understanding these challenges is crucial for developing strategies to improve the management of elderly diabetic patients in these settings.
Statement of the Problem
Managing diabetes in the elderly is complex, requiring individualized care plans that address both medical and psychosocial aspects. In Kebbi State, PHCs are tasked with providing this care amidst various constraints. Challenges such as limited access to diagnostic tools, inadequate supply of medications, and a shortage of trained healthcare professionals can lead to suboptimal management of diabetes among the elderly. Additionally, factors like low health literacy, cultural beliefs, and financial constraints among patients further complicate management efforts.
Despite the critical role of PHCs in managing chronic diseases, there is limited research focusing on the specific challenges they face in caring for elderly diabetic patients in Kebbi State. Addressing this gap is essential to inform policy and practice aimed at enhancing diabetes care in primary healthcare settings.
Objectives of the Study
1. To identify the challenges faced by primary healthcare centers in managing elderly diabetic patients in Kebbi State.
2. To assess the impact of these challenges on the quality of diabetes care provided to elderly patients.
3. To propose strategies to overcome identified challenges and improve diabetes management in PHCs.
Research Questions
1. What are the primary challenges encountered by PHCs in managing elderly diabetic patients in Kebbi State?
2. How do these challenges affect the quality of care provided to elderly diabetic patients?
3. What strategies can be implemented to address these challenges and enhance diabetes management in PHCs?
Research Hypotheses
1. PHCs in Kebbi State face significant challenges that adversely affect the management of elderly diabetic patients.
2. Addressing these challenges will lead to improved quality of care and better health outcomes for elderly diabetic patients.
3. Implementing targeted interventions can mitigate the challenges faced by PHCs in managing diabetes among the elderly.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on selected primary healthcare centers in Kebbi State, examining the challenges they face in managing elderly diabetic patients. Data will be collected through interviews with healthcare providers and reviews of patient records. Limitations may include potential biases in self-reported data, variability in resources among different PHCs, and challenges in generalizing findings beyond the study area.
